Mystery Bag

21.10.05
This morning I woke up early to go to the post office. I wasn’t expecting anything special so was very surprised when I got two package notices in my mailbox. After standing in line forever, my turn finally came.

The first package was from my dear friend Bonnie. It was so sweet of her to send me such nice things and it made me so happy. She sent me pictures, article clippings, the cutest little book, and a beautiful letter. I can’t wait to see you Bonnie and I miss you so much! I am so lucky to have a friend like her. I guess she sent it two months ago and it finally came, the post mark was for August 5. It was more than worth the wait.

The other package was a big mystery because it was so BIG. It was a huge bag with a lock on it and “United States Post Office” written on the side. It looked like a big dirty laundry bag! I had no idea what it was and it was so big and heavy that I didn’t know how I would get it home. The post man told me to go get help and that he would keep it until I came back.

I called Nathan and asked him to meet me with his bicycle. He was more than willing and was there in a flash. When he saw the bag he said, “I think you win the prize for biggest and most mysterious package.” It took awhile for us to get it steady on his bike but we made it work and he peddled it all the way to the taxi stand for me.

When I got home, I gathered all of my strength to lift the bag out of the taxi and to my front door. It took me awhile to drag it up the stairs and when it was finally in my front room I collapsed onto the ground.

I still had no idea what it was and was so curious. I opened it, pulled the bag apart, and looked inside. There, inside, were tons of books! I pulled one out and then another and another. They were the nicest books I had ever seen and there were so many of them!

It was then that I realized that my good friend BJ Weitl had sent me all of these books. She told me she was going to send some but I didn’t think it would be this many and this nice of quality. I took them all out and read each cover, just in shock at someone’s generosity. I counted 165 books in total, all of them being so nice and ranging from little kid books, to novels, to Newbery Meddle winners. I was so happy I wanted to cry and I could barely believe it! This was what I needed to start a little library at my dar chebab for the kids and it w! as all thanks to BJ. My students are going to be so happy and I can’t wait to start my little library.

I can’t thank you enough BJ and words can’t express how happy I am!

I took a picture of all the books and brought it to my director. He was so excited and is going to buy shelves for the library this weekend!

When I was looking through all of the books, I came across one that made me laugh. It was “Our Only Mae Amelia”, written by a local author in Seaview. I went to a book signing of hers once and my mom has bought all of her books. I can’t believe that something that close to home will now be in a little library in my dar chebab in Morocco.
